Here and There
The Gallery-on-the-Boulevard will present “Here and There” a photography exhibit by Cranford photographer Jim Chelland. His images were captured around New Jersey and include landscapes and wildlife.
Chelland is a “self taught” photographer and began his photographic journey in 1973 as an amateur. After working in Martino Studios, he eventually became a serious shooter utilizing a Nikon D850 and various Nikon lenses including a 65mm macro lens and a 150–600mm macro lens.
He looks for subjects that interest him, which can be a land or seascape, a sun or moon rising or setting, wildlife or an abstract that can be brought to life in a photo. Hopefully, they all say something to the viewer.
Chelland has received several awards from the Union County Senior Art Competition, including First Place. He was also the 2026 People’s Choice for Landscape in Friends of the Rahway River Parkway Calendar and Cranford-Milburn Camera Club’s Picture of the Year 2021. He is also a member of St. Veronica’s Guild Photography Club.

Magnified
The Gallery-on-the-Boulevard will present “Magnified” the macro and closeup photography of Lenny McDonald, a New Jersey-based photographer who sees the world through curious, observant eyes. After a rewarding career of over 20 years as a chemist, he shifted his focus to the more creative pursuit of photography, highlighting the capture and revelation of beauty in nature. Lenny has showcased his work in solo, duo, trio, and more than 35 group exhibitions. He has been recognized and awarded first place in a Union County show and at the statewide level for his photography-related work.
A self-taught photographer, Lenny has completed over 165 hours of in-person photography classes, earned certificates for over 60 hours of online photography courses, and participated in several workshops and critiques. He has delivered workshop and lecture presentations such as “Smartphone Nature Photography” at Reeves-Reed Arboretum.
“Magnified” is intended to reveal subjects with an “in-your-face” clarity. The camera helps us find details already present but often unseen, inviting viewers to slow down, feel calm, and see the familiar world differently through careful observation. By shooting up close, McDonald uses the camera to help us notice textures, patterns, and structures we often miss in daily life. Variations
The Gallery-on-the-Boulevard, located in the Kenilworth Public Library, will present “Variations” by artist Darrin Owens of Westfield from September through December. The work contains variations of representational art in various mediums, including graphite pencil drawings on paper, oil paint on canvas paper, oil paint on canvas, and acrylic paint on canvas. It will demonstrate examples of still life, fan art, master copies, and stylization.
Owens retired from his job as an actuarial benefits consultant after 36 years and dedicated himself to pursuing his love of art. He studied anatomy under Frank Porcu and oil figure painting under Leonid Gervits at the Art Students League in New York. Also figure and portrait drawing with Joel Tidey at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. He has exhibited his artwork in numerous group and solo shows in New Jersey and New York. He is currently President of the Westfield Art Association.

Perspectives: Life Through Our Lenses
The Gallery-on-the-Boulevard will present “Perspectives: Life Through Our Lenses” exhibiting the work of four women photographers from May through August.
Jacki Dickert is a New Jersey fine art photographer and is active in the NJ photography community as an exhibiting artist, teacher, and judge. Regarding her infrared photos she says: “Infrared hones my ability to compose without the distraction of the usual colors and the temptation to fall into cliched ways of seeing.”
Cintia Malhotra is a visual artist and educator whose primary medium is photography. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in New York, California and elsewhere. Speaking of her photos, she states: ”I am in constant observation mode, focusing on what others normally ignore in their day-to-day.”
Charlene Federowicz graduated from Rutgers University School of Communication and worked in various industries. Now retired, she is savoring a rediscovered passion for photography. She enjoys “photographing nature, particularly the beauty of the ocean at sunrise, as well as the sunsets along the bay.”
Barbara Wirkus is a self taught photographer who has exhibited her award winning work in local galleries for many years. She explains that “As I enter the 9th decade of my life, I am drawn to photographing things that are aging and deteriorating. They document the last stages of life.”

The Colors Around Us
The Gallery-on-the-Boulevard will present “The Colors Around Us” exhibiting the work of photographer Joseph Manzella. The exhibit is on display from January through April. The Gallery is located in the Kenilworth Public Library.
Manzella has had a long and varied career in photography, illustration, painting, computer graphics and design which he merged to create compelling digital art and photography. Vibrant color is a consistent theme and feature in all of his work, which helps him achieve a “painting like” quality.
He has received 3 First Place Awards from Union County Art Exhibits and 2 First Place Awards from New Jersey Senior Citizen Art Show in the Digital Category. His images have been on display with the Westfield Art Association and the Artist Framer in Cranford.
Manzella states that “I always felt a need to preserve what I see, whether in the ‘real world’ or in my mind’s eye so that I can experience and enjoy it later. This is what I strive for in the art and photography that I create and what I can, hopefully, offer to people who see and experience it.”

Seasons
The Gallery-on-the Boulevard, located in the Kenilworth Public Library, presents “Seasons” an exhibit of photographs by photographer Barbara Wirkus of Kenilworth from September through December. Although she has attended classes and workshops, Wirkus considers herself self taught and had a darkroom to process prints that were exhibited in multiple group and solo shows in local galleries. She now has a digital Nikon D3500 with a Cannon 18-400mm lens. She has received numerous awards including Award of Excellence – Westfield Art Association and First Place – Union County Senior art Exhibit.
Wirkus explained that she chose “Seasons” as her theme because it was peaceful without angst or stress. She captured images representing each season of the year. Many were close to home. A snowy Wilhelm, a tree ent, on her backyard tree; a blooming forsythia bush. Fall photos were taken from the back of a friend’s motorcycle. She rested the camera on his shoulder as they cruised through parks and countryside. The images are meant to provide a relaxing photographic experience for the viewer as well as a nostalgic journey for the artist.

Scenic Union County
Fine art photographer Jacki Dickert
The Gallery-on-the-Boulevard, located in the Kenilworth Public Library, will present a collection of photographs captured by fine art photographer Jacki Dickert titled “Scenic Union County.” The exhibit will open in January and run through April.
Dickert is a participating member of the New Jersey photography community, serving as an artist, teacher and judge. A prolific artist, her images have been exhibited in numerous galleries around the state as well as being published on book covers, in textbooks and in magazines including Backpacker and The Sun. She has served as judge for the Union County Teen Arts Festival, NJ Federation of Camera Clubs among others.
Dickert won first place in the Ansel Adams photography contest held by the Fenimore Art Museum in NY and also had work accepted into the Newark Liberty International Airport New Terminal A exhibit – NJ: Journey of Surprises. She is a salon level member of the Camera naturalist Photo Club and a popular speaker with the NJ Federation of Camera Clubs.
Since retiring from teaching elementary school, she now teaches private photography classes, does workshops for all ages and leads group photowalks.
Speaking of her work, she states. “Ifeel great wonder and joy in the world around me. In awe of what I find in nature, I love the land, plants, patterns, and little corners of the world that I discover in my frequent wanderings there. I would like the viewing of my photographs to be a rich experience, evoking emotion and stimulating the imagination. “Catching Light”
Visual Artist, Joy Sussman
The Gallery-on-the-Boulevard, located in the Kenilworth Public Library, will present photographer Joy Sussman in a solo exhibit of her work entitled “Catching Light”. The show will open in May and close at the end of August.
As a visual artist, Joy Sussman is a work in progress .She describes herself as contemplative, creative, curious about everything, and her work reflects those qualities. Painterly still lifes, dreamy landscapes, fine art photography, tiny macro worlds, mobile art photography are some of the many areas that interest her. Joy received her first Kodak Instamatic camera for a Christmas present at the age of 7. She now works interchangeably with a full-frame Canon DSLR camera (5D Mark iii) and an iPhone to capture images, and then uses a combination of desktop software and mobile editing apps to add textural interest and mood.
Joy majored in Art History at Vassar College, worked several years in the creative sector of advertising in NYC and Philadelphia, and is now a full-time photographer. She also teaches online classes in photography and has created and curates/edits a magazine called Catch Light: Creative Inspiration for Photographers and Visual Artists (available in print and digital formats).
Joy’s photographs and written work have been published in U.S. national magazines: Artful
Blogging,and Bella Grace. She was one of seven Honorees worldwide in the Photography category of 2015 Voices of the Year and again in 2016. Her images will be included in Juried Group Exhibition, “Arts in the Park,” Randolph, New Jersey May 2023, and Juried Group Exhibition, “Reflections of Solitude,” 2023 Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival, Toronto, Canada May 2023.

“Afloat”
Artist and Educator, Karen Murphy
The Gallery-on-the-Boulevard, located in the Kenilworth Public Library, will present: “Afloat”, a series of paintings by artist and educator Karen Murphy. The exhibit will open in September and run through December.
Artist, educator and single mother Karen Murphy explores many media in her art practice, but painting has been a lifelong passion. She has a BA in Art Education, Virginia Wesleyan University and did graduate work, Virginia Commonwealth University. In recent years she has preferred watercolor, using elements of pure abstraction, with colors, shapes, textures and compositions inspired by her love of air and water.
An avid swimmer, Karen finds creative inspiration in the fluid feeling of weightlessness experienced in water, and the dynamic intersection of air, water, and breath. Her art making, like her swimming and parenting all involve seeking out pockets of air and beauty in a space that will swallow those who stop moving. At times there is fluidity, strength, serenity and grace, and at other times the artist submerged and gasping. As much a restorative practice as it is a creative practice, this work represents the act of sheer determination to stay Afloat.

Evoke
The Gallery-on-the-Boulevard, located in the Kenilworth Public Library, will present the multidisciplinary work of North Jersey artist Winston Young entitled “Evoke”. His work encompasses a diverse range of themes, blending both traditional and contemporary styles and includes surreal features.
From the age of five, Young knew he wanted to be an artist. As a high school senior, he entered a national art competition and was selected to represent New Jersey. He was awarded an Art Scholarship and attended art school, majoring in illustration. He forged a career in advertising for 20 years, but then rekindled his love of painting with oils, refining his technique and style. A prolific artist, he was able to mount a solo show at the Les Malamut Art Gallery, followed by another exhibit at the new Union Art Gallery.
Young states: “I hold a profound respect for the diverse genres, movements, and traditions that have emerged throughout history—from the Classical and Renaissance eras to Surrealism, Abstraction, and beyond. I study these movements not only for their historical significance but also for their inventive approaches to color, form, and composition.” He also “loves to experiment by combining styles and traditions from across time.”
